IFF Conference – “Multilateralism and Globalization in an Era of Strategic Competition and Implications for Asia”

International Finance Forum (IFF) convened a conference on 5 May 2023 with the theme “Multilateralism and Globalization in an Era of Strategic Competition and Implications for Asia”, which was hosted by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and supported by the Hong Kong Academy of Finance (AoF).

With over 100 guests attending the event, the conference began with opening remarks from Mr John LEE Ka-chiu, Chief Executive of HKSAR, who said “multilateralism and globalisation form part of Hong Kong’s DNA” and “Hong Kong’s success is based on our versatility and resilience”.

The first session of the conference was titled “Multilateralism and Globalization in an Era of Strategic Competition”. Speakers debated important questions such as what went wrong with globalisation and what kind of multilateralism could co-exist with strategic competition.

The second session of the conference was titled “Prospects and Roles of Asia, Hong Kong, and the Greater Bay Area”. Speakers discussed what Asia, the Greater Bay Area, and Hong Kong should do in light of geopolitical fragmentation and deglobalisation. In particular, Vice Mayor Lai of Guangzhou highlighted the importance of cooperation between GBA and Hong Kong, while Eddie Yue suggested neatly that Asia should “build resilience, be strong, and make more friends”.
