The HKIMR Thirteenth Annual International Conference on the Chinese Economy on “China’s Economic Development in a Changing Global Environment”

On 27 October 2023, the HKIMR hosted the Thirteenth Annual International Conference on the Chinese Economy, titled - “China’s Economic Development in a Changing Global Environment”. About 120 participants from central banks, private sector, academia and international financial institutions attended the conference in-person.

Enoch Fung, Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong Academy of Finance (AoF) and Executive Director of HKIMR opened the conference. He was delighted to see that this flagship event had once again served as one of the leading fora for experts from around the world to discuss the most important issues on the Chinese economy.

In his welcoming remarks, Eddie Yue, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, highlighted China’s remarkable achievement in economic development over the past forty years. He also discussed the potential fundamental drivers to support China’s longer-term productivity growth going forward, and how China’s green transition could facilitate its efforts to promote high quality growth.

Hongyi Chen (HKIMR) moderated a panel discussion with five leading China experts, Andrew Tilton (Goldman Sachs), Haibin Zhu (JPMorgan Chase Bank), Helen Qiao (Bank of America), Louis Kuijs (S&P Global Ratings) and Dora Xia (BIS). They shared their views on “Recent Developments and Outlook of the Chinese Economy”.

James Yetman (BIS) chaired the session on “Total Factor Productivity Development in the Chinese Economy”. Yifang Zhang (CUHK) presented his research paper of “Where Has All the Dynamism Gone? Productivity Growth in China’s Manufacturing Sector, 1998-2013” and Xiaodong Zhu (HKU) presented his research paper of “China’s Productivity Challenge” respectively.

Guonan Ma (Asia Society Policy Institute) chaired the session on “Industrial Policy in China”. Yi Wen (Shanghai Jiao Tong University) presented his research paper of “China’s Industrial Revolution: A New Perspective” and Shuanghe Shang (Peking University) presented his research paper of “The Railway on the Silk Road: The Effect of China-Europe Railway Express on Manufacturing Geography” respectively.

Giorgio Valente (HKIMR) chaired the session on “Green Finance in China”. Yang Zhao (CICC Global Institute) presented the research paper of “The Scale Effect and China’s Green Transition” and Yao Lei and Haodong Fu (People’s Bank of China) presented their research paper of “Strengthen Hong Kong as an International Finance Centre through Close Cooperation in Green Finance in the Greater Bay Area” respectively.
